Graphic Novel Review

The Walking Dead: Days Gone By Volume 1

Ok… I know. I’m way behind the times on this one, but I’m getting back on the Graphic Novel train starting today. So that’s got to make up for something! I walked into Samurai Comics in Glendale Arizona this afternoon, went to the desk and asked the handsome comic-clerk for some help. I wanted a good Zombie comic to review and he pointed me, with no hesitation to, The Walking Dead: Days Gone By Volume 1. Which as we’ve mentioned here that AMC is doing the TV version starting Oct. 31st. Now that the bills are paid, here’s the review of Volume 1…

How To Make A “Haitian” Zombie

In his new book “Real Zombies, the Living Dead and Creatures of the Apocalypse” author Brad Steiger explores Haitian Voodoo and the origins of many zombie myths.

So instilled are these beliefs in zombies, or “Nzambi” as Haitians refer to them, that it’s illegal in the country to raise people from the dead! But here’s the secret formula that he says can RAISE THE DEAD SO LAWS BE DAMNED… WE WANT THE ZA!
***

  1. A chemical that is part puffer-poison (tetrodotoxin), part toxic marine toad (Bufo marinus), and part toxic-toad (Osteopilus dominicensis) is mixed.
  2. The resulting dried-out powder is then applied somehow to the skin. Davis theorized that the irritation properties of the chemical breaks in the victim’s skin, allowing the puffer fish poison to easily pass through.
  3. The victim becomes paralyzed, heart rate slows, and an appearance of death settles over. Victim is then buried.
  4. The priestess returns, digs up the victim, and applies a paste consisting of “zombie cucumber” or jimsonweed  which causes the “zombie” to fever, develop amnesia and hallucinate.
  5. Through the power of suggestion and the paste effects, the victim believes that a transformation has taken place and that they really are a zombie; meant to serve the priest or priestess.

Zombie 101… An Actual Class!

The University of Baltimore is offering a class this semester on the all things Zombie related.

The course, taught by Arnold Blumberg, the author of a book on zombie movies, “Zombiemania,” and the curator of Geppi’s Entertainment Museum, which focuses on American pop culture.

Students taking English 333 will watch 16 classic zombie films and read zombie comics. As an alternative to a final research paper they may write scripts or draw storyboards for their ideal zombie flicks.

The university isn’t the first to have a class on the undead. Columbia College in Chicago has offered a course on Zombies in popular media for years, and at Simpson College in Iowa students spent the spring semester writing a book on “The History of the Great Zombie War.”

Brad Pitt to star in World War Z

One of The Survival Team’s favorite books of all-time and the best “Book-On-Tape” we’ve ever listened to “World War Z” by Max Brooks is going into full on production starring Brad Pitt. Max Brooks MTV News that “Quantum of Solace” director Marc Forster will direct “World War Z” which is scheduled to release in 2012.

Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, picked up the rights to “World War Z” in 2007, edging out Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Which is fine because all of us here at “Don’t Get Bit” think DiCaprio is a lefty douche.

All I have to say is that they better not f-up this movie. We all like Brad here and with such movies as “12 Monkeys”, “Seven” and “Fight Club” under his belt we are hopeful that they will stay true to the book and it’s companion piece “The Zombie Survival Guide”.

Your Moment of Clarity

Here at “Don’t Get Bit” we strive to educate not to just destroy, maim and decapitate. So in today’s “Moment of Clarity” I present to you a selection of Zombie Haiku from Zombie Rama

I felt your lips, teeth
brush against my shoulderblade,
but it was not love.

Zombie Bruce Springsteen
was not “Born to Run”; no, he
was born to eat brains.

Autumn’s bold decay
cannot stop the oncoming
waves of undead flesh.

Just a little bite,
my single-minded purpose
brains, brains, brains, brains, brains.

Zombies are no fun,
When you see one you must run,
Or shoot with your gun.

Zombies would most likely wipe out humanity?

I think not, but apparently some dorky, desk humping, pencil pushing nerds got out their calculators (they better learn to us an abacus for when the Zombie Apocalypse does actually happen) and decided they were going to see what would happen for the big ZA. Below is the article and here’s the link to it. There is a glaring error in it.. there is NO cure for the Zombie Apocalypse… We are the cure. But the emphasis added below is the only thing “The Team” saw when I showed this to them at this morning’s briefing. You can buy the book it’s featured in here. Here’s some snippets but go over to the full article and give it a read…

Civilization would most likely be finished in the event of a zombie outbreak, claim Canadian mathematicians who have calculated the possible devastation caused by an attack by the fictional monsters.

In their study, titled When Zombies Attack!, the researchers picked “classic” slow-moving zombies such as those in Dawn of the Dead as models and divided humanity into three: the living, zombies and the “removed” – zombies who had been killed by decapitation.

They concluded there was no point trying to cure those infected or live with them – the best thing was to destroy them as quickly as possible.

“As seen in the movies, it is imperative that zombies are dealt with quickly, or else we are all in a great deal of trouble. Only sufficiently frequent attacks, with increasing force, will result in eradication, assuming the available resources can be mustered in time,” they concluded.

How fast do we need to deal with the outbreak? Here’s the equation they used, where S = susceptibles, Z = zombies and R = removed. If an infection breaks out in a city of 500,000 people, the zombies will outnumber the susceptibles in about three days.
